Dentures can provide restored appearance and function to smiles damaged by missing teeth. Complete dentures provide a full set of teeth for those missing all or most of their natural teeth. Partial dentures fill in spaces left by a few missing teeth in order to make chewing, speaking, and smiling easier. Filling in these gaps also keeps other teeth from shifting and provides needed support to your facial structure.
A complete denture comes in one of two forms: “immediate” or “conventional.” Conventional dentures are those which are made to provide a long-term solution. A conventional denture is crafted after all of a patient’s natural teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has had time to heal. The healing process can take anywhere from four to six weeks. During this four-to-six week period, the patient will use the immediate dentures as a temporary solution. These dentures are not made to last long-term, but will provide the patient with a full set of teeth so they do not go without teeth while waiting for the conventional dentures.
Dentures are durable and meant to last for several years. However, changes in gum tissue, alignment or the device may require adjustments to be made. Dentures can be readjusted, remade, and repaired depending on the patient’s needs.
You may require a partial or complete denture in the following circumstances:
Partial dentures can restore several teeth missing in an arch. Complete dentures replace all teeth in an arch.
Dentures can also be used to enhance your smile and facial tissue.
If you have trouble chewing or speaking, dentures can aid In these tasks, too.
How long does the process take?
Dentures require several appointments. The treatment usually takes several weeks to complete and dentures will always require checkups to ensure your oral health and the effectiveness of the device.
